  1. The mileage ratings are determined by the manufacturers.  For instance, if Goodyear and Firestone make an identical tire, one might market it as a 50,000 mile tire and the other and 80,000 mile tire.  All this means is that the company will give you a prorated credit towards a new tire if yours wears out within their mileage warranty period.  There is a huge discrepancy in tire life.  Wider tires (65 series and lower) are usually made of softer rubber which gives them better handling ability.  If you had 195/65/15 tires they would normally last 30K-50K miles.  If you had 255/55/17 tires they would normally last 25K-40K miles.  On the other hand a car with 185/80/14 tires could see 50K-80K miles out of them.  Check to see what brand and model tires you have and call an independent tire store to see what they say about the expected mileage.  No mileage warranty is valid without proper rotation and alignment intervals which can differ a little between manufacturers.
