In Illinois we have something called "stand alone" internet service its $35.00 a month. if I decide to use this "stand alone", I will have no dial tone via the phone line. the phone service tells me "stand alone" is a high speed internet. How high of a speed will I need to use the magic Jack? per the magic jack commercial " the magic jack will provide the dial tone, is that true.

  1. Do not disconnect your PSTN landline service before completely testing and being satisfied with any PC-based VoIP service.

At the bare minimum, have a backup service on a VoIP ATA that does not require a PC.  But you need a backup phone system of some kind.

But, even with a backup VoIP ATA that connects directly to Internet through your Modem/Router, if you lose your Internet connectin, you have no phone service.

Prior to this week, I would have said... go for it.  But this past week my trusty reliable Cable Internet service has been very, "intermittant".  So, not only am I losing my Internet connections on my PC, I can't even call the cable company to resolve the issues becuse my VoIP depends on their Internet connection.

And these days, regardless who you have service with..... Customer Service....is..... really, really..... Bad!!!   If your problems are beyond 3rd grader level.... forget it.  The best advice they can offer is.......... Unplug and reboot your equipment and it will all be better.....yeh right!!

And this goes for Every Company I have had to deal with their CS.

Ok, now that I got that off my chest..... go for it.  We learn best from the school of hard knocks...

  2. Yes, that is true -  The MagicJack will give you a dial tone just like a regular houseline.  I've been using the device for over a week now and I haven't had any problems with it at all!  The quality is great and I'm saving $70 a month.

Any way you look at it, the MagicJack simply saves money and is currently the cheapest way to get phone service.

This site has some good video reviews for the MagicJack:

  3. before you rid yourself of the phone service, try out the MagicJack first!

you will need a very reliable high-speed Internet provider to start....( cable, DSL or wifi-fixed) and a USB 2.0 port to start...and remember, your Computer has to be on "ON" all the time to use the MJ...and yes....you will get an dial tone after you have installed their sofware and register the MJ
