There's one weakness of being Overseas Chinese - We're never belonging to any single land. If you live away from any Chinese community land, you'll automatically be rejected any local status when you claim yourself as being born in that country (Especially in conservative countries like Malaysia and Indonesia). If we return to China, our predecessors will never recognise us any more. For every immigrant, it'll always be an honour to visit their own ancestral village. Problem is, being born away from Chinese Mainland and where it's not compulsory to speak Mandarin or in this case, speaking a dialect so different from the actual dialect in Mainland China itself, how do we communicate in order to get directions to visit our ancestral village in Fujian Province in China itself? I'm from Penang, Malaysia by the way.

  1. I have managed to visit many places in China, including several small villages and i speak very little mandarin. Generally speaking take a train to the nearest big town/city then a bus to your destination. I usually get someone to write down (or text message) specific instructions for me, then show these to the ticket office. If you tell me where you wanna go i can research it for you, i am pretty handy with various chinese travel websites
