Question:

If I want a really nice sound, what brand/type of cello strings should I buy?

I do understand that cello quality and skill are huge factors in this, but strings are important as well.

I'm using the same four strings that came on my cello [it's rented, almost payed off now] but I'm not sure what brand they are, or how long they've been used before I rented it.

The cello itself isn't the best quality, but it's not bad at all. It's full size.

The problem I seem to be having is that my A string mostly is very twangy and squeaky [my D as well, not so much my G and C]. I can't play up in position without getting horrible sound and my bow feels like it's ripping at the string?

Money isn't really a concern. Thanks for any help!

  1. The expensive the better so yeah, change your strings.

  2. Admittedly, I'm a viola player, but my orchestra teacher always recommends Helicore strings for all string players. These are pretty low budget and a lot of professionals use them.

Here's a website with pretty much the same question you asked:

    http://www.cello.org/cnc/tim20.htm

    http://www.cello.org/index.cfm?fuseactio...

If you really want the best strings (and yes, they do matter A LOT) I'd recommend doing Google (oh, wait, Yahoo!) searches on your favorite cellists and finding out what strings they use.
