Question:

If I want a single subject credential, do I have to have a degree in that subject?

I'm finishing with an M.A. English, and toying with the idea of getting single subject credentials and working a while before my PhD.

Even though my degree is in English, I am also talented in Math and Science. In fact, sometimes I like math more than I like English depending on the topic!

I know that there is more job demand for math than there is for English, plus if I were going to teach high school, I would prefer math for that age group. (Ideally I want to teach English at the college level.)

Can I earn single subject credentials in math or science even though that isn't my degree major? I have A's in all my previous math and science course work, and am sure I would do well with standardized testing. I took the ACT and SAT over 10 years ago, but at that time scored in the 98 percentile.

  1. In my state you must have at least a minor in a subject before you can be certified in grades 9-12.

  2. terry above is partly correct.

Since you have a BA, you can sit for other subject matter verification tests.

However, since you are a new teacher - you would not be considered "highly qualified" (NCLB) because you do not have a major or major equivalent in that subject. Districts are penalized for having hires that are not HQ.

I have a microbiology BS. I sat four 5 subject matter verification tests - and was fine until NCLB came along. I then needed to go back and get major equivalents in the subjects im teaching.

check with your state board and look for highly qualified candidate status.

  3. Yes.  All you have to do is pass the Subject Area Exam in that area to earn your certification.  Your state department of education website can give you more information, including how to register for the test.

If you are going to teach ANY subject, you will also have to take the General Knowledge Test.  Register for it and take it on the same day/same place as above.
