I will be going yo US next August to study medicine in the US and would like to know which one is the procedure to bring my future husband (if I marry) along with me.I know it's already hard enough to get into medical school, but if I manage to get accepted into Medical School and I am going to apply for my visa, would it make it any harder for me to get if I get married and apply with him? or is it better to get my visa, study for a while and then get married?Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  1. To get a dependent's visa for your husband is difficult.  You not only have to prove you can pay for medical school and all of your living expenses, but provide for his support as well!  He cannot work as a student's dependent.

If you come on a student visa, then marry while you are in school, you lose your visa and must return home.

Remember, a student visa is not an immigration-class visa.  Students are forbidden to work; they must have sufficient funds to pay for school and everything in order to qualify for the visa; and a condition of issuance is that you return to your own country upon completion/termination of studies.  You can never change a student visa into an employment visa or any category allowing residence.  The same conditions apply to a student's dependents.  You both would have to return to your own country as soon as you finish school and remain home for a minimum of 2 yrs before you are eligible to apply for any type of visa (even tourist) to re-enter.

Plan to finish med school, return home, then marry.  The expense and time-consuming trouble while you are in med school will definitely interfere with your studies.

  2. The first poster has no idea what he is talking about.  If you are married when you apply for your student visa, you can get the F2 visa for your husband automatically.  He can choose to live her with you or not, but he is entitled to the visa.  If you marry once you are already a student you do not lose your student visa, you could then apply for him to get the F2.  Your student visa (F1) is only invalid once your studies are completed, or you drop out of school. And there are circumstances where you as an F1 can work.  The F2 is not granted a work permit.  And lastly, the F1 visa is a great way to apply for a work visa which most definately can lead to a green card.  A large majority of F1 students are recruited by employers with the H1B visa which is a classification which is entitled to adjust their status to that of a resident.
