Question:

If I want to be homeschooled, how do I go about it...?

I live in Louisiana, and next year I'll be going into eighth grade. I want to be homeschooled, my mom is fine with it, but we don't know where to start.

How do we register? Where can we get the supplies? Are there tests? Will my mom be able to do it if she dropped out in 12th grade...?

Sorry for all the questions, I'm new to this.

  2. you should check with your state to find out more information about homeschooling in your area. you might also want to see if there is a homeschooling group in your area also that you can be apart of. Some groups also have different moms teach subjects at there own home or at some place. but sometimes the cost of some classes will cost.

you might also ask your schools counselor for all the required course that you will need to be eligible to go to the next level, there are many different forms of test that you can take to make sure you are ready for the next grade. you state might have some suggesting or even testing centers you can take this test, they are usually called, placement test.

you can get supplies online or at a some type of teaching store, Merdels is a good place for homeschooling items. They are also many course you can take that you can do on the computer and it pretty much teaches you so your mom doesn't have to worry about teaching you.

another good thing about being homeschooled is that when you can go at a fast pace and then when you have worked up to a level you might want to even start college classes at a community school such as college algebra, history, english, it would give you your high school credit and as well a head start in college!

the one negative thing about being homeschooled is that it might cost alot because your having to buy books and supplies...and it can get pricey....so if you what ever books you need you should try getting them at ebay or amazon.

    good luck.

  4. Your first step should be to check out the homeschool laws in Louisiana.

Then, look for a homeschool group near you.  Nothing beats meeting other families who have experienced what you are going through and they can help you answer any questions you have.

You'll also want to search Yahoo Groups for "Your Town, LA+Homeschool" for local homeschool groups.

Here is a list of Yahoo Groups that have to do with Homeschooling in LA.

I didn't see anything in LA Homeschool Law that would stop your mom from teaching you but you should read the law yourselves and check with local homeschoolers for more information.

One more thing... I highly recommend that you read: The Teenage Liberation Handbook: How to Quit School and Get a Real Life and Education by Grace Llewellyn.

    Enjoy your homeschool journey!

  5. All of these answers look pretty good.  Just one more word of advice:  Don't use one curriculum.  It's okay to use several different ones; that way you can get everything you want out of your education.  It's fine if you Mother dropped out at 12th grade.  She will still be able to help you out if you have a question.  I am home schooled and I really just learn from the books.  My parents don't have to do a whole lot, even though they would be ready and willing to do so.  So, you'll do just fine.  Oh!  And the HSLDA if a very good idea.  Some friends of ours had a bad experience when someone said that they didn't teach their children. Oh! Another thing.....look into Keystone Enterprises for a video-taped Algebra course; Leonard Firebaugh teaches it - it's very good.  And look into some extra classes from a community college if you want.  It looks good on a college application.  Good luck to you! :-)

  6. www.hslda.org

HSLDA (home school legal defense agency) is a must, have your parents check out the website.

  7. google homeschooling Louisiana

    This website looked informative...
