  1. A realtor is a real estate agent who pays dues to the Board of Realtors.

  2. All Realtors are real estate agents, but not all real estate agents are Realtors.

The term "Realtor" is a professional designation we receive when we join the Board of our Realtors in our locality...it is a 3-tier membership that also includes state and national membership.

Understand, that any agent you work with will most likely be a Realtor, because the Board of Realtors OWNS the MLS.

The MLS is not run nor governed by the state.  To have access you have to be a Realtor.

PS:  Janet's answer is completely wrong.  As my explanation above, they are NOT the same.

A broker is NOT more qualified than a Realtor.  A broker is just a different type of license that permits you to own your own brokerage without a supervising broker-in-charge.

In most states, you don't have to sell a single house to be a broker, all you have to do is take the classes.

    So much for "more qualifed".

  3. They are one in the same.

A realtor is simply a real estate agent who joined NAR, the National Association of Realtors.

If you want someone better qualified you need someone with a brokers license.
