I have been taking birth control pills for about 4 years. My fiance and I (getting married 8-23-08) probably aren't going to have children for 4-5 more years but I would like to know how soon I should stop taking the pill?

  1. I got pregnant the month after I stopped taking the pill so definitely wait until you are ready.

  2. my friend got pregnant 1 month after she stopped the pill.

  3. every woman is different. I took the pill for 5 years, and was off it 11 months before I got pregnant.(we weren't trying though). our gorgeous daughter is now 6 months old! i've heard to give yourself 6 month to a year, to rgulate yer cycle, after the pill

  4. Since it can take a few months to start having regular periods again, I would probably stop the pill (and use a different method, like condoms) 3-4 months before you want to start trying.

OTOH, if you opt to start trying right away, and do start ovulating again immediately (most women DO start up again within a few weeks), it's perfectly safe to do so. Some women do get pregnant the first month off the pill.  (The only issue would be knowing if you ARE pregnant, because you wouldn't know if a late period meant pregnancy, or just meant that you were one of those women who needed a few months to start ovulating again!)

  5. If you want to wait for 4-5 years definitely keep taking it! I got pregnant after being off for only 2 months.  So I would wait until about the time you want to get pregnant.

  6. An hour and 45 minutes.
