I have a bachelors in geology and want to get a masters. Should I pursue geology, geography (atmospheric/meteorology), or Environmental Science?

  1. Climatology is the most applicable field, if it's an option.  With geology you can study paleoclimatology, but that's just the history of climate change, not the present.  Environmental science is too broad, and geography isn't really applicable.

  2. I think it depends on what you want to do with yourself after you finish your schooling.  I too did a BS in Geology and then did an MS in Env. Science.  I work as an environmental consultant and find myself spending all of my time fixing environmental messes that someone else has created (usually having to do with groundwater).  So that is probably not the best approach if you want to do research.

I would think that an MS in meteorology or atmospheric science, coupled with your background in geology would be the best fit.

As far as I can tell from reading research conducted by the leading authorities in the climate field, you surely need to be conversant in physics.

    good luck

  3. geology..3.5 billion years ago...bacteria in rocks

  4. Analytical Statistics...the entire science revolves around crunching numbers, and most of those currently involved do it poorly.

  5. Forget school, buy a crystal ball and you will be intellectually equal with many of your climatology peers when it comes to the science of man made global warming. I recommend you pursue a science that will actually be beneficial to man kind rather than making him the skum of the earth. But alas taking the high road may prove more difficult if you're looking for research funding.
