If I want to upgrade from my old phone to a new Iphone 3G do I have to get a new plan?

I am currently with AT&T and want the new 3G Iphone, but I don't want to upgrade my plan; I just want to upgrade the phone. Does this mean new phone-new plan or does it mean I can just stick in my SIM card to the Iphone and call it mine?

  1. Unfortunately, you can only buy the iphone 3g if you sign up for a new 2 year plan. If you are already a AT&T member this would mean extending the plan from the purchase date for another 2 years. There are also specific plans for the iphone that you will have to choose from. You do all this in the store you purchase it from.
