I have learned a lot about boxing. I learned it from friends who were in MMA. I lost contact with them to ask them if they knew. I have unofficially taught a few people how to box. I want to do it officially. What do I need and how do I get it? Thank you

  1. MMA ain't boxing first off, even really good MMA strikers would not make good boxers. First off you should have at least been a boxer yourself, You don't have to be but your not going to be very good. All the great trainers where boxers first. You cant just walk into a gym and say "yea I tought a couple neighborhood kids how to box can I be a trainer?" they would probably say get in the ring and lets see what ya got, and after they knocked ya silly would probably turn ya down.

heres a couple questions you should be able to answer in detail.

How do you plant your feet if your want to punch?

How do you plant your feet if you want to box?

    Where does a jab start?

Where does a power punch start?

How do you hold your shoulders and chin to avoid getting hit?

How do you parry a punch?

Where should your eyes be focused when fighting?

How do you defend against the Jab?

How do you get on the inside of a taller fighter?

What is the advantage of getting inside on a taller fighter?

That would be just some questions regarding technique. What about breathing techniques? What about over extending?

If you want to be a trainer or coach without have actually been a fighter or at least participated in boxing for years you might be ripping people off. So officially you would have to go to a gym and apply to be a trainer, but the first thing they are going to ask you will be

How long have you been in boxing for?

How long have you been a boxing coach?

    What credentials do you have?

If they even went this far they might say get in the ring and lets see what you got?

They are going to want to know that you know what your doing, they don't want to be sued of course and they don't want a bad name for their gym by hiring someone who is not that good at it.

Go to your local gym and pay extra for one on one training, after a few months ask them to train you to be a coach, and maybe after a year or so they may allow to "coach" some newer or younger members, after a few years of coaching if you have proved to be a good coach, ask them to train you to become an actual trainer.

I think legally anybody can be a trainer, Calvin Brocks dad bought some boxing how to videos and his son Brock went all the way to a championship fight, but that was more on the athleticism of Brock, then he got destroyed against Klitchko.

But if you train some guy off the street and take him into the ring and he gets hurt badly or is horribly outclassed he could sue you if he found out you had no previous experience.

    Good Luck

  2. If you want to be a good trainer, then you need to learn from a good boxing trainer!!!!  During my fighting career, I was lucky to have boxed under some very good coaches in South Philly including Rev Thompson (he helped train Matthew Saad Muhammad) and Jimmy Arthur (a legendary Philly trainer).  At Lock Haven University, I trained under Dr. Ken Cox (well known and was assistant team manager for the '96 Olympic team).

They taught me a lot of things from proper stance and punching technique to conditioning drills and psychology.  Now when I train people, I use the knowledge that was given to me.  And I get  respect because I have been in the ring.

And here is a VERY important point, you don't learn boxing from an MMA guy.  I was offered a chance to teach some boxing techniques in an MMA gym and the manager of the gym told me "not to waste time on boxing technique because boxing is just punching people!"  I immediately walked out.

I wish you the best of luck and I strongly urge you to do it the right way!!
