I was only a worker for a single day, so only worked a few hours. I never gave my social security number. I thought we were going to be paid under-the-table, because I was supposed to only work a few hours, but was asked to file a w9 form to be paid. I didn't want to do this, so ask them to not pay me, because it would cause problems. Would it cause any problems if they just forgot all about me and did not pay me for the few hours I worked? I am in Los Angeles, California, USA.

  1. Well that's weird.  Are you undocumented?  If so, then you shouldn't be trying to work in the US.  If you are a citizen, then why the heck would you think it would be a good idea to get paid under the table and avoid paying taxes?  I guess you donated your services since they can't pay you legally without your social security information.

  2. Working under the table is illegal.

Not paying taxes on earnings is illegal for both employee and employer.

Asking not to be paid is not illegal.

An Employer not paying an employee for work is illegal.

Fill out the form and take the check.

  3. Since they don't have your SSN, there is no real link to you.  If you are not asking for payment, then the company has no problem and neither do you.

The company cannot compel you to complete any forms, nor force you to take money.  If they try to contact you, simply say you refuse any payment and consider the matter closed.

This is really a non-issue.  Just forget about it.

  4. Mate!!.  You should have asked for the Cash First. If not See You Laters.  Don't work for Nothing.
