I live in UK and would only probably rent films. Also does anyone know which ones can be wall mounted vertically.

  1. I think blu is best choice....

    Its a new technology..

  2. HD is basically dead. You can find some movies on HD, but no new movies will be coming out on HD.  The HD player and dvd's are probably much cheaper, but not worth it in the long run, since there's only a limited amount of movies you can watch that are on HD. Definitely buy a blu-ray player.  Only buy a blu-ray player though if your TV resolution is 1080p and at least 37" if not 42" or larger.  If your TV is smaller than that or 1080i/720p, just buy an upconverting dvd player(Toshiba works very well for me), as you won't be able to tell the difference on such a small tv or one with lower resolution.

  3. Possibly neither.

First of all Blu-ray is the only choice now if you want to move to HD disks. BUT, Blu-ray is still too expensive (prices are expected to come down by the end of the year or early next year), and will remain more expensive than DVD for both players and disks. It's far from certain it will replace DVD ... and may remain what it is now: a premium priced alternative to DVD.

More importnat, you need to have equipment capable of taking advantage of the potential sound and video quality improvement. At a minimum you need an HDTV, but preferably a medium sized 1080p model and a good surround sound audio system with capability to handle the advanced codecs on Blu-ray disks.  Less than that and you may see/hear little improvement over DVDs on a much less expensive upconverting DVD player.

Bottom line, don't be in a rush (unless you really need a new player now). Get a demo. Evaluate what you have in terms of equipment. In the meantime let player technology mature and prices come down and choice of movies improve (there are still less than 700 movies on Blu-ray).

A Blu-ray player MAY be the appropriate choice, but DVD isn't going anywhere soon and many consumers don't consider Blu-ray to provide a sufficient advantage to justify the current premium prices. This may change in 6-12 months ... but unless you have to decide today (e.g. your DVD player just died) I'd say don't rush.

  4. You're better off buying Blu-Ray.

  5. The Blu Ray is the way to go.

The reason to consider the PS3 over some other Blu-Ray players is Sony has already upgraded that to Blu-Ray Ver 3 which allows online interactivity, some of the older players that can not be upgraded will not be able to use some of the features on the newer Blu-Rays.

  6. Buy the PS3 over all the others....

DO NOT BUY HD-DVD, it lost out to Blu Ray about 2 months ago sadly....

And you didn't hear about it?

I think the Blu Ray is Multi-Positional too.

And it costs the same as a Plain Old Blu Ray WITHOUT gaming capabilities....

So, what is there not to like about it?
