Question:

If I were to get a job in Medical Anthropology, would it constitute a lot of travel?

I don't mind the occasional trip, but Medical Anthropology with Ethnobiology sounds like I'd never be home.

Does anyone know if this is correct?

  1. You have to go where the Ethno is.

In Medical Anthropology, you might end up a coroner/forensic pathologist. which means a local job.

there are lots of areas to work in, you get to pick.  Ask when interviewed if this job requires 30% travel or 100% or are you going to be living in a foreign country.

Good luck.  You may not be home, but who cares!

    Home is in my suitcase.

  2. It really depends.  One of my colleagues got her master's in medical anthropology, and she works at a local WHO office.  There's no travel involved.

If you're doing ethnobiology or ethnobotany, you probably WILL travel at least some - especially if you work in academia.

  3. Well I suppose it depends on if you want to work in the United States, some other state, or in another country.  The answer Robert gave is true, I would think there is a lot of travel (it also depends on what you are doing: are you moving from project to project, or working permanently say in a building).  However, you might talk to Robert more about this, because I only have a minor in Anthropology and never really had a job in either Sociology or Anthropology.  He sounds like the expert.  I'm actually currently looking for a job, but of course it's hard to find something in my area, especially since I don't have a Masters or PhD degree.

  4. Anthropology in itself usually consists of quite a bit of travel.  Unless you happen to alread live around the area of your study.

Ethnobiology would be hard if you aren't actually interacting with the people.  So yeah, travel would be involved quite a bit.

I am a physical anthropologist/archaeologist.  I stopped travelling to spend time with my family.  Maybe when my boy is old enough, we can all to it together, if it interests him.

  5. no, ice cream doesnt have wheels; therefore, a computer mouse cannot block the radiation of a paper clip, unless it is a thursday, or the sky isn't not sometimes gray, sometimes.  Otherwise, no, you cannot paddle a garbage can up a rollercoaster, unless you are using a hands-free cellular device.
