  1. Sorry...I do not have much respect for Kung-Fu anymore. I thought it was a legit form of self-defense until a Kung-Fu instructor challenged me at the gym one day. This guy just would NOT leave me alone. Finally after about 6 months of his "taunting" I agreed to spar with him. At the time I was a Green Belt in Japanese Shotokan style of karate and he was a "black sash" or sifu of some kind. He even called all of his friends over to watch. After 5 minutes of him slapping me around I got serious and started throwing some kicks at him which pretty much destroyed him. He fell to the floor about 4 or 5 times and was too weakened to continue. I walked away from him, as he decleared himself the "winner". Maybe he wanted me to beat him until he was dead.....I dunno. After that there wasn't anymore lip from him about sparring.

My advice is to try Judo or Aikido. Some women do very well in karate or Tae Kwon Do also. This seems to work very well for many women who are interested in learning some basics of self defense.

  2. have a look around and choose the master that produce the best fighters.

For a quick fix, go for Muay Thai or Krav Maga.

For Kung fu, go for Wing chun, southern praying mantis, Choy lay fut.

  3. Well if you want to learn to defend yourself without dealing with any nonsense, then look up a Krav Maga school near you.

I've been doing Krav Maga for a little bit and so far I love it.

There are no fancy moves, no useless drills. Krav Maga is all about defending yourself on the streets. This isn't a sport like a lot of other martial arts have become. It's like, "You want to try to hurt me or someone I care about, and I don't have a choice but to defend myself, so I'm just gonna beat the s*** out of you until you can't even stand or until I kill you, and then I'll go home."

It doesn't matter if there's one or three guys, or if someone has a knife or a gun in your face, Krav Maga teaches how to handle all that.
