I live in California and I am sure over 8 hours is OT

  1. only if you work more than a 12 hour shift.

  2. Federal law requires overtime pay only for hours over 40 worked in a week.  Some states do have laws that require OT pay for hours over a certain number in a day

  3. Nope.  OT (generally) is any hours worked over 40.  Some people work four 10-hour shifts (instead of 8) and get 3 days off in the week and it's paid at the normal rate.

It could vary by state and employer, but that's how it is for me where I am.
