If I wrote a poem in an email to yahoo groups would they "yahoo" automatically have the copyright to it ?

more so than Yahoo, you'd want to have it copyrighted to you first before a member takes credit for it.

No. Yahoo automatically has Copyrights to anything you post in answers. But groups are a different matter. Many Writers, Artists and production companies post in Group's  file sections to establish their copyright dates.

Even if Yahoo chose to contest the copyright, their claims are outweighed by the Rights of Living authors granted in the '80's in the Copyright Laws when they were revised due to complaints by old time pulp writers like Louis L'Amour regarding Pirate Editions of their old stories.
