  1. He was actually assigned to PT 59 after the accident, but because he re-aggravated his back during the 109 incident, he only remained with the 59 for a couple months before being transferred.

PT boats at the time had a person below deck to operate the "DRIVE" "FORWARD" REVERSE" gears for the engines, pt 109 was in neutral, and the command that was given to go to "forward" took too long, they were "Rammed" by another Japanese ship, since then the U.S. Navy made all PT boats remain in "DRIVE" during combat operations.
