It's just a song and i'm not really bothered by it's meaning, all i know is that i like it and that Johnny Cash is a legend.

While stated a little harshly.  There is truth in that statement.  If you are not saved God is going to cut you down.  Many scriptures speak on this.  In fact most of the sower parables show that we are all going to be cut down and then sifted.  Those that have trusted in Jesus will be saved.  Those that put their faith in something else will be destroyed.  Cut down twice if you will.

music is music... he sang gospel before he sang anything... and sometimes he doesnt choose the song, he is paid to record it.

johnny cash is an amazing artist, and had one of the most celebrated careers in history. he is not contradicting himself, he is trying to find himself. even when he sings this song at 72 years of age. such a powerful statement!!

I guess we will never know since he is gone now. I know he spent some time in prison and I recall he found God at one time, and I think that his wife and her family knew God well.

I don't see them as any more sinful than the people listening, and secular is the audience they're playing for. Maybe he's saying that no matter who you are, you can run for a long time, you can try to hide, but God's still gonna get you in end.
