Both are great inspirational leaders, who will not only teach so much, but inspire the lads with their own enthusiastic love of the game and joyful delight in it.

  1. i think they are the best choise becuse nobody is more better than them.

  2. Mike Catt would be ok, but I would aim more for Lawrence for forward work along with Rowntree or Leonard for scrum coach and Will Greenwood or Will Carling for backs coach.

Definatley need coaches with passion, Ashton was alright but so flat and dull.

  3. I think they are both exellent choices, though i do feel sorry for Brian Ashton, he didn't do too bad a job when you consider it.

  4. A inexperienced Martin Johnson/Mike Catt combo wouldn't be anywhere near as good as English led Jake White/Mike Catt partnership.

Though why Andrew would want a strong character underneath him like Jake..or why the RU don't even seem to consider foriegn coaches..is another question.

  5. Far too much inexperience here, England need to get someone in who has coaching credits........shame they missed out on Shaun Edwards really, they obviously have less confidence in him than Wales do, yet he seems to be one the key coaches who has played a part in the Welsh success!

Does an inspirational captain with no coaching experience have the ability to coach a national team?

    That is the key question!

  6. The result will be mediocre.

  7. They may be good motivators but are they great coaches?

  8. In such a technical sport like RU - inspiration will only go so far.  With no formal coaching qualifications these two will be limited when England come up against the major powers in the sport.

England's national team may be well served - but England Rugby Union and the legion of coaches who have been encouraged to follow the system and work up from the lower tiers have been kicked in the teeth.

A thought for Brian Ashton, by the way.  He was treated absolutely dreadfully.  That and the reluctance to appoint Shaun Edwards do indicate that Twickenham remains full of the 57 old farts with a distinct hatred for northerners.

  9. I think that a change in England coaching will be good for the team. Only time will tell as to weather or not it actually makes a difference.

  10. Catt would be a great Coach - 4 RWC's and a bagfull of experience.

  11. as i keep saying its great for welsh rugby.  fair play to the english management they haven't got a clue.

  12. martin johnson is a very talented forward but he has no experience coaching, playing and coaching are two completely different things. how many great players have gone onto be great coaches? not many. but at least mike catt has experience. he is a backs coach as well as player with london irish and look how well they are doing semi-final of the european cup. i think england will struggle at the begining with them and it will take a few years before they start winning.

  13. Good player doesn't necessarily make good coach ?!?!?!?
