If Mary wasn't of the royal bloodline, but Joseph was, then how can Jesus have fulfilled that prophesy?

Being that God was the father, not Joseph.

It quite clearly shows that Mary wasn't of that line.

  1. Matthew traces Joseph's lineage back to King David, and beyond. Luke traces Mary's lineage back to King David and all the way back to Adam. Therefore Jesus was of the House of David through both parents

  2. jesus is the ONLY Begotten!

you cant get any more royalty or divinity by blood than that!

  3. Mary was of the tribe of Judah

Ancient Christian tradition records the names of Saint Joachim and Saint Ann as the parents of Mary, the Mother of Jesus. They were both members of the Tribe of Judah of the house of David. According to tradition, Joachim and Ann came to Jerusalem from Galilee. Over the centuries, they have been honored, especially in the East, at great churches and shrines built in the memory of them. Historically, and biblically, not much is known of Joachim and Ann, except that they are the parents of Mary and grandparents of Jesus.

By their fruits we know how people lived, Jesus taught. The Church recognizes the grandparents of Jesus as models of family virtue and faith, which they transmitted to their offspring.

Let us raise our daily song,

    each day freshly crafting,

    worthy cries unto our God,

    hymns in praise of Mary.

The echoed sound our choir reflect

    as Mary fills our praise,

and every voice with fervour swells

till all our hearts are filled.

Mary of the tribe of Judah,

    Highest Mother of the Lord,

    Gave a fitting cure

    To sick mankind

    Gabriel has carried the Word

    from the Fathers breast

    Who has been conceived

And received by the mother's womb.

    This is the greatest,

This is the most worthy holy virgin,

Who by faith did not draw back

    But remained firm.

    None before has been found

    like this mother,

    none from among those

    of human birth.

By the woman and the wood

    the first world passed away;

    By the woman's virtue

    Life has been restored.

    Mary, Mother most admired,

    Of her Father manifested,

    By whom the water washed

    The whole world in faith.

    She conceived a pearl,

    Not an empty dream,

    For which any sober Christian

    sells his all.

A tunic made with utmost care

    Christ's mother fashioned

Pierced through at the death of Christ,

    By the lot remained untorn.

Let us put on the armour of light,

    The breast plate and greaves,

That by God we may be perfected,

    Supported by Mary.

    Amen, again Amen.

We swear by the merits of childbirth

    That we may be snatched

    From the burning pyre.

We call upon the name of Christ,

To the angels who bear witness,

    That we may enjoy

And be written in the heavenly books.

    Holy Mary, well deserving,

    We beseech your dignity

That we may gain the throne

    Where you live on high.

  4. Mary was of the direct blood line. Joseph was not. but he is regarded as the father still. Yes Jesus had a step dad!

  5. Mary the mother of Jesus was the daughter of Heli, though the genealogy given by Luke lists Mary’s husband Joseph as the “son of Heli.” Says M’Clintock and Strong’s Cyclopaedia (1881, Vol. III, p. 774): “In constructing their genealogical tables, it is well known that the Jews reckoned wholly by males, rejecting, where the blood of the grandfather passed to the grandson through a daughter, the name of the daughter herself, and counting that daughter’s husband for the son of the maternal grandfather (Numb. xxvi, 33; xxvii, 4-7).” It is undoubtedly for this reason the historian Luke says that Joseph was the “son of Heli.”—Lu 3:23.

Mary was of the tribe of Judah and a descendant of David. Hence it could be said of her son Jesus that he “sprang from the seed of David according to the flesh.” (Ro 1:3) Through his adoptive father Joseph, a descendant of David, Jesus had a legal right to David’s throne, and through his mother, as the “offspring,” “seed,” and “root” of David, he held the natural hereditary right to “the throne of David his father.”

  6. He couldn't.

The mother passes the ethnicity but it is the BIOLOGICAL father who passes tribal affiliation (even adoption doesn't cut it).

Until Christians give up on the virgin birth thing, which isn't even really part of the messianic prophecy, they'll continue to be blind to the even more grevious errors.

  7. excellent question.

  8. The Bible is a tad bit biased against women..

  9. The Matthew genealogy follows Joseph's line (Jesus' legal father), through David's son Solomon. Luke follows Mary's line (Jesus' blood mother), through David's son Nathan.

Through both of these lines, Jesus Christ is David's descendant.

  10. Um...Mary was a temple virgin whose pregnancy was "discovered" by the high priest.

Yeah, go ahead and flame me. You're not getting me to believe that a church with a chronic affliction of pederasty and molestation didn't start out from similar roots.

  11. That's why there are two genealogies presented in the bible. Matthew traces Christ's genealogy thru Joseph (as an adopted or responsibilities assumed for) son and Luke traces Christ's genealogy thru Mary......both lead back to David, the line prophesied anciently to provide the Messiah.

Use of the word son could also mean a descendant; which could be a grandson, great grandson, or son of a more distant generation. Son could also be used to describe kinship without sonship. Although Zerubbabel was the nephew of Shealtiel (1st Chronicles 3:17-19), he was called the son of Shealtiel (Ezra 3:2, Nehemiah 12:1, Haggai 1:12). Jair is another example of this principle. He was a distant son-in-law of Manasseh (1 Chronicles 2:21-23 and 7:14-15). Yet, he was called the "son of Manasseh" (Numbers 32:41, Deuteronomy 3:14, 1st Kings 4:13). Point is - the word son can be applied to several types of relationships.

  12. In the Semitic tradition, inheritance and genealogy are matrilineal , they are passed along the mother line. Since Joseph was not the "father" his family or tribal affiliation does not matter.

  13. Does this mean we all go to h**l now?

bw- did you read Luke's account?
