If Michael Voss becomes Gold Coast coach, how will he deal with big-head young players with credibility?

The conventional wisdom is that any aspiring senior coach should do an apprenticeship as an assistant coach first.

If Michael Voss goes against this wisdom, how will he deal effectively with big-head young players wanting too much responsibility too soon without them laughing at him?

  1. just as long as there arent any players like Fevola, and Franklin that come into the team, im sure that they'd be professional enough to respect the coach. i personally wouldnt wanna get at the wrong end of Voss.

and im sure he could turn to other coaches for advice before he starts, and im sure that the assistant coaches and staff would also make a stand if the big headed young players show no respect

  2. i dont think that situation will arise.

  3. i think he would b gd but should be assistant at anotha club b4 hand

  4. hmm.....he wont be a coach of the GC straight away......he has NO experience!

  5. who are these big-headed young players you speak of????

i think it would most likely be beneficial for voss to coach under someone first, but i think he could do it (be a senior coach without being assistant coach first)

provided that he begins coaching in a lower league before the gold coast team moves into the afl. he could coach the proposed tac cup team there and therefore get some experience which will be invaluable in the long term.

  6. It wont matter who is the first coach of the new franchise. They wont be successful, because success is only measured in Premierships, and it always takes a couple of coaches before a new club wins a flag. Examples are Peter Knights at Brisbane, John Cahill at Port, John Todd at WCE, Graham Cornes at Adelaide and Gerard Neesham at Fremantle.

They were all champion players and/or coaches, but couldnt get success at newly formed clubs.

As for 'big-headed players', I doubt they would last in the team anyway. Plus, there wouldnt be any who could say that they have captained 3 AFL Premiership teams in a row plus won a Brownlow, so they would be absolute morons to laugh at a player with his credentials. They would be straight into the 'seconds' or de-listed.

  7. He will step down as coach.

  8. Voss won't last as a senior coach of a new franchise if he hasn't had some experience before. Someone like Kevin Sheedy should start as coach, while Voss gets some experience, and then Voss should take over. He won't be able to cope with big-headed players or anything like that until he has been in that type of environment before as a coach, not a player.
