If Ronnie O’Sullivan retires from snooker, it will be good - says Ali Carter
During the 2012 World Snooker Championship at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield, the World Snooker Chairman Barry Hearn made an announcement that the snooker governing body is adding more events in the upcoming season. With this new addition, the snooker
calendar had more than 30 events in a season.
Where the news was good for some potters, it was a shock for many others at the same time because the calendar was already full and the players, especially the Top 16, had very little spare time to take some rest or spend with their friends. Some of the
potters criticised this decision including the four-time World Snooker Champion John Higgins and Ronnie O’Sullivan.
Barry Hearn told the press that the reason behind adding more snooker tournaments in a calendar is making the players financially better. He said that he wants the players to be millionaires by playing in all tournaments of the season.
However, O’Sullivan, Higgins and now Ali Carter do not agree to Hearn’s thoughts. They believe that the players need rest more than they need money. Following his decision, O’Sullivan has decided to take part in selective tournaments.
Meanwhile, Ali Carter believes that O’Sullivan is financially strong so he can quit tournaments and even if he retires, it will not make any difference since he has achieved so much in his career. He is one of the top potters in the world and has earned
a lot of respect worldwide.
Speaking to BBC Sport, Carter said, “If he (O’Sullivan) retires it'll be good. He's won the World Championship four times, he's achieved everything he probably wants to in the game and he's got a couple of lovely kids and wants to spend more time with them.”
The Captain added, “The way the tour is going, the financial side isn't a motivation for him anymore. If I was in his position I'd be doing exactly the same as what he is.”
Former two-time World Snooker Championship runner up, England’s Ali Carter is all set to begin his new snooker season campaign with the 2012 Wuxi Classic snooker tournament which has now got the status of major ranking snooker event. On the other hand, the
four-time World Snooker Championship winner, Ronnie O’Sullivan has refused to sign the contract with World Snooker because he wants a break.
