If Russia (or whomever) were to send a nuke to the US...what would be the immediate response?

Would we send one back to destroy the nuke coming our way before it hit? How successful would that attempt be? And then would we send one back in retaliation? I'm just curious what exactly would happen here if the worst case scenario occurred......

Response: "Confidence is high, this is not an exercise," Aboard the E-6 MERCURY (TACAMO) airborne command center: "Major Reynolds, we have reports of a major attack on the US at this time, numerous ICBMs"......"roger confirm" he tells the ground tracking commander at Beale AFB and then turns to the major and says, ".... 300 missiles in bound at this time!".

Strategic bombers are scrambled, EAMs issued to Ohio Class nuclear subs, minute-man silos are given launch orders, President conducts war conference, activates nuclear 'football, and issues retaliation order, then high tails to nearest airborne command center.

Radio station broadcasts are interrupted: "This is the EMERGENCY BROADCAST SYSTEM, for those of you in transit in the Kansas City area [insert your own city if its over 250,000], the Federal Emergency Management Agency advises you to proceed to this nearest shelter. While you are in no danger, FEMA would like to go over the steps to take in the event of a probable attack...."

result: panic in the streets, run on the gas stations and grocery markets, ATMS machines fail, cell phones fail, stores only take cash, some rioting and violence begins and bumper to bumper traffic on all freeways leading out of cities...that's the public's reaction.

The television stations interrupt their broadcast with unconfirmed reports of low yield kiloton nuclear bombs airburst over advancing Russian troops on the Polish frontier.

more panic...and chaos as people stream to the shelters and roads out of town.

Another news bulletin from national network "...unconfirmed reports of a low yield nuclear explosion at NATO regional headquarters in..." the TV goes dead.

It's no use, an air burst explodes like a sun, with the EMP knocking out all electrical circuits in a 650-mile radius. Soon after are the 500 kiloton explosions vaporizing everything at ground zero.

In thirty minutes 1.1 billion souls are lost in the northern hemisphere, mostly in the US, Russia, Europe, China and Japan; another 1 billion will die soon after from radioactive fallout, the northern hemisphere is plunged into prolonged agony and barbarism. Soon after, the nuclear winter catches up to the southern hemisphere and all plant and animal life eventually die off.

This is why nuclear wars are MAD.... we've been 28 minutes away from a nuclear launch at any given time... not counting the SLBM 4 minute warning launches...

Aussies need to be more worried about nuclear weapons from Japan, China and South Korea. If anybody has read the news lately. Mostly because China has become more powerful and Japan doesn't trust USA anymore. Search in Yahoo News " Australia may face Asia nuclear threat"

our current policy is to destroy any nation that does attempt to use a nuclear weapon against us.

We do not have an effective anti ballistic missile system. We could not destroy a ballistic misslie that was sent to target us.

We would not have a measured response.

If Russia sent one nuclear tipped missile at us we would respond with several thousand missiles tipped with nuclear weapons.

Essentially Russia or any other nation that attempted to hit us with a nuclear weapon would cease to exist.

fortunately the Russian leadership is not foolish enough to attack us with nuclear weapons so it is extremely inlikely that would ever happen.

What is far more likely to happen is that Iran will be successful in purchasing on the black market, the technology to enrich Uranium to weapons grade.

The Iranians will then give that weapons grade Uranium to the Muslim terrorists.

the Muslim Terrorists will use the weapons grade Uranium to make crude nuclear weapons.

The Muslim Terrorists will then smuggle those crude nuclear weapons into the United States in shipping containers and place them in various cities such as San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York and Washington D.C.

Once the Muslim Terrorists have crude nuclear weapons in place in the various target cities, they will detonate them all at once.

that will cause chaos throughout the United States.

It will overwhelm our emergency services system with millions of casualties.

Our economy will collapse, civil order will break down.

It will be our worst nightmare.

that is far more likely to happen than Russia shooting a nuclear tipped ballistic missile at us.

I would believe the immediate response would be to blow up their country with as many nukes as we had. However, you would assume that the other country would expect a retaliation from the United States. So, wouldn't you think that they would send many nukes at us if they wanted to? However, NORAD as well as other underground government organizations are scattered across the country and the world, so I would say that even if they nuked all of the United States, we would still get a few off.

I would like to say though, that war would never be the answer, and I would hope that any other country would have the sense to not attack other countries as we do.

Well there might be a chance of knocking one out of the air but I wouldn't bet on it. The US would retaliate and light Russia up. I'm talking not even a blade of grass or even the smallest microorganism inside Russian boarders

we have **** you wouldn't believe if they launched a nuke we would blow it up over the d**n ocean no sweat but not with another nuke that would be wasteful. after that the whole world would turn on russia and they would be screwed. worst case scenario we lose a good amount of soldiers in russia but not mass death.

The most realistic and smart way for this event would be to shoot down the nuke with one of those missles that detonate both itself and the oncoming nuke, or a laser would heat up the casing and have the nuke detonate in the middle of its course. The retaliation would vary from country to country, if it was Russia or another major country, I'm sure diplomats would scurry all over the place and the two presidents would use their hotline to communicate with eachother and see what the heck happened. If it was a more "minor" or country that is at war with us, we would most likely retaliate with a bombshower over the launch site, and then some political c**p would happen.

Worst case scenario would be that the current president is stupid or nuke-obsessed, he/she would launch our entire salvo of nukes at whoever launched them, then they would launch theirs, and then the other countries would jump in for the fun of it (not really "for the fun of it", but just to dish out some of their own punishment to whomever they please), and the world will be dead, but that scenario is very unlikely.
