If Someone Says That Your Hair is Coarse, Is that Bad?

I am African American and people always tell me I have coarse hair. I always thought that coarse hair meant hair that was unmanagable, but people say that I have a beautiful head of thick hair. So my question is.. is coarse hair a bad thing? Exactly what does it mean.

  1. Coarse really just refers to the texture of your hair - what the individual hairs on your head are like. So it isn't a bad thing. I'm caucasian and I have coarse hair too. The difference between coarse and its "opposite," fine hair, is that coarse hairs are bigger around, may have a rougher cuticle, and may also be wavy or curly. If freshly washed and not styled, it will probably feel rougher to the touch than fine hair will. Fine hairs have a smaller diameter, are usually straight and may have a smoother cuticle because of that. In my opinion, coarse hair can be hard to manage if you're trying to force it against its nature, but if you work with its natural advantages like thickness, body, any wave or curl you have, it will be easy to style and you'll be happy with it.
