If Tassie had their own AFL team, who would support them?

Tasmania has a population of 400-500,000 people, most of whom would already support an AFL team, and probably remain loyal to them. Who will buy memberships, and go and watch games?

  1. Not enough people ... that is the answer.

Tasmania used to produce many good footballers. The well seems to have dried up in that state now. Are there any Tasmanian players of any note running around? I don't think so.

  2. me mum

  3. While the Taswegians have been trained to follow the Hawks, I reckon that a Melbourne team having difficulties keeping up with the leaders in football and membership should transfer there.

    Richmond.

    The Tasmanian Tigers!

There are far too many inner-suburban Melbourne Clubs, they need to spread out a bit. Melbourne, North, Richmond and Carlton are competing for fewer and fewer locals and have not developed outer suburban territories. The Hawks have gone east, the Saints south-east, the Dogs have the west and Essendon the north west covered.

Richmond to Tasmania, and amalgamate Melbourne and North as the Melbourne Kangaroos.

  4. Not enough people would support a new team - that's why the AFL have no intention of putting a team in Tassie.

New Norfolk, in the Hobart League, changed their colours to that of Hawthorn & their nickname to the Hawks. Tassie followers have adopted Hawthorn as their team - I can't see many of them swapping allegiances if a new team was ever established there.

  5. The Richmond V Hawthorn Game last year had a ground record crowd of over 24,000.

That compares well with many of the smaller grounds on the North island.

There is absolutley no doubt that Tassie people love and support their footy.

Population has nothing to do with it, - the problem for Tassie is the condition its own state wide league is in ( non existant)

the Hobart V the rest mentality, and the fact there are two many levels of footy and two many clubs at different levels competing for the same players.

The best thing they ever did for footy is Tassie was to build Aurora at Lony, not in Slowbart.  Lony is by far the most central city in Tassie, and ensures that the people of the Northwest (arguably the biggest footy area in the state) can attend games as well.

The other problem is of course - dollars. There are just more of them in places like the Gold Coast and Sdyney.

  6. They'll get members, they just need a big name recruit in a coaching staff or player e.g South Dragons - Shane Heal, Michelle Timms.

Even if they are not the most popular team in Tasmania after their first year they will be after 8-10 years (IF they would last that long)

  7. I think they should have a team instead of another in NSW or a Gold Coast team.

    Go the Tassie Devils!

Also, they should have a map of Tassie in the V of their shorts.

  8. My guess is Tasmanians

  9. oblivious Tasmanian people

  10. while im a true die hard tiger man i will alwayse follow them and put my money where my mouth is

my wife and i would also pay for membership to a tassie team

you would find thousands like me in tassie

the same could be said of the dockers and power im sure before they entered the league their supporters followed other teams

where would western sydney get their supporters from there are only x amount of aussie rules supporters in sydney

having the hawks down here is not the same we only get the games which they wont get big crowds to in melbourne .

i can assure you there would be plenty of support down here for a tassie side

i would be a bit torn when they play the tigers but being a tiger man they would alwayse be my no 1 team

    edit// hahahaha **** enal gee i havnt heard that 1 before ///not///

  11. If the AFL established a team in Tassie they would get all the current Tasmanians, who support Carlton, as new supporters.

Fans are abandoning Carlton in droves.

  12. Im from Tassie, and am a Member of the Bombers, if they ever got a AFL side i would watch them for sure, and i most likely would buy a member ship, i cant see why tassie cant get a side, theres heaps of tpo talent form Tassie in the AFL, Tassie loves there footy and they would get heaps to there games

  13. They DESERVE their own team ....

they have always been a Football state .. and they have provided some brilliant players over the decades..

and bloody h**l .. when the swans first went to Sydney .. they gave away tickets to get the people there .. DO YOU THINK YOU'D HAVE THAT PROBLEM IN TASSIE?

Those Taswegians who support other teams have probably done so over the years because the teams had taswegians playing in them . .( hmm Peter Hudson springs to mind!!)

  14. Cossy, that's who!

  15. 'brads fan'  cossy wouldn't support them, he's a tiger boy. we never leave our team.

good question though richo, i don't think it would happen over night but it would happen as kids grew up, the afl would have to bank roll them for a while, corporate tassie would get behind them.

In S.A and W.A, most also supported VFL teams, but now they support their own states teams, most people, some would never swap.

They deserve a team before west Sydney and the gold plated coast in Qld.

    edit- GOOD ON YA, COZZY.

  16. Read my profile - I'm a tasmanian sympathiser. But i wouldn't jump from the swans to make the Devils my #1 but I think most people would like to see tassie do well (except the AFL board that is).

If money really is the criteria that determines the ongoing success of a club then Tassie will never make it.

  17. no-one most of them go for the mighty hawks. people would go to their games but most of them support the hawks  i think they will never have a team

  18. the penguins

    ;-)

    .

  19. haha what a joke

  20. Is that 400-500,000 heads on 200-250,000 bodies, and aren't they all related so they'll be able to by a family ticket.

  21. They have a team, the Tassie Dawks!

They're the ones that wear those tops with the

    p**s & sh*t stains on them

    Don't think I'll support them

  22. I think when the time comes, it will be Hawthorn who reside there expanding the comp into Tassie, with financial benefits.

I hope it doesn't happen that way, but Hawthorn are already established and have a good supporter base there.

Being a Hawthorn supporter i want them to stay in Vic. I think as long as Jeff K is there then the hawks will be home in Vic

  23. not me!
