Question:

If The Valves Aren't Adjusted Properly, Will That Cause Low Compression?

On my 1972 Chevelle, before I took the cylinder heads off to replace them, it had good compression on all cylinders except two adjacent ones. So, it turns out that the gasket was blown and the heads had some cracks by the cylinders where it was leaking. Anyway, bought new stock heads, installed them and now it is getting low compression in many cylinders. Did not touch anything else. Just a couple things to keep in mind: The compression was fine before replacing the heads, the car is a factory original 1972 chevelle 350, and the motor is not knocking in any way.

  1. Yes I agree if your valves are held open that will lose compression. Depending on your lifter type (hydraulic or solid) you should set your tappets. For a solid type set a clearance and for hydraulic adjust them to just touch then a further 1/4 turn.
