  1. it's simply business, oil tycoons/oil producing countries will not allow its business get affected by these new energy sources, they won't just allow it to prosper, they are powerful lobbyist, by curbing researches on these alternative enery sources.

  2. vegetable oil is a great substitute for diesel only. new oil would be to expensive. used oil must be collected from restaurants, then taken somewhere to filter it. the cost of getting setup may outweigh the savings depending on how much you drive. you have to add another tank in your vehicle for the oil. the oil must be heated first be for it can flow into the engine so modifications must be use. you start the vehicle on diesel, let the vegetable oil heat up then switch to it. be fore you shut the engine off you must switch back to diesel.

  3. it isn't a great substitute for gasoline, although you can fairly easily convert a diesel car or truck to use it. That said, it still isn't a great substitute because there are issues with it when cold and there is no distribution network for it, you have to get it from restaurants or whatever and filter it yourself, it's not a simple process. The more people that start doing it, the harder it will be to find from sources like that, and if people buy new veg oil, it will drive the price of it way up which will affect food prices.

Plus your car smells like french fries (really)

  4. Vegetable oil is made mainly from rape seed (rape is that yellow stuff that stinks to high heaven and sets peoples hayfever off badly).

Rape prices are nice and high at the moment, and never come anywhere near as cheap as oil prices anyway.
