Question:

If You Get a BSN Can You Still Be a RN?

I'm a Freshman in High School, I think I want to go into the pediatric area of nursing. But this whole BSN, RN, LIV etc. is confusing to me! I want to work in a hospital I think I'm leaning toward being a Newborn Nursery Nurse. What degrees to I need to do that? What is the difference between having a BSN and a RN? I'm just not quite familiar to the nursing field, I don't really have anybody in my family who knows about nursing. If you could help me I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks,

Katie

  1. BSN is a bachelor's degree in nursing.  It's possible to be an RN without having a BSN, with a two-year degree.  In either case, you would take the same state licensing test to be an RN.

  2. A BSN is the degree you earn (from a four year university program), the RN is the LICENSE that you earn, which can be obtained with either an ADN (Associate's Degree in Nursing, 2 year program) or a BSN.

As long as you hold your RN license, you can be a Newborn Nursery RN.

  3. I pretty much just answered this same question.
