is that a bad sign? What would you suggest?

I do not have any kids nor do I plan to. I heard of a three year old that didn't know her animals yet.

  1. I think that it really depends. Children learn different things at that age. My 2 year old (almost three) knows common farm animals and ones that are common in his fathers home country but he calls all primates monkeys, not gorilla, chimp, baboon, etc. And for the last year he called cows..moos. I don't think that is a bad sign at all as long as the child is learning and making progress. Does she maybe know her colors or numbers?

  2. If the child's parents or those who spend much time with her have not shown an interest in animals by talking about them, reading about them or exposing her to some of the many different kinds in some other way, she would have no way of even knowing the basic dog, cat and fish types.

Children's minds are like sponges, just soak up what is in their environment, but at 3 they are still so young that unless their family has exposed them to animals  (in whatever way) then they cannot be expected to know them.

Children are never too young to be read to, talked to, and exposed to a very wide amount of mental stimulus.

  3. i would suggest spending some time teaching that 3-year-old the difference between different animals.

it could be a sign of a learning disability, the parents should take the child to a specialist

  4. every child learns at his or her own pace.

  5. Get her an animal picture book-

it's amazing what a book can do for a child-

puzzles are fun too (great way to learn fine motor skill as well)

the more you give them, the more they will learn

  6. is it possible shes never been exposed to learing about animals.... for most children they learn them quickly because of the types of toys and books or tv that parents offer.  Its quite possible she hasnt had the availability of such things???

  7. children learn at different speeds than others.....i would just work with her...maybe  suggest taking her to a zoo, try picture books, puzzles, or i' m sure they have an educational video about different animals. Sitting down with her and working with her on it..will speed up her learning them TREMENDOUSLY!
