If a Jumbo Jet has to make an emergency landing?

So that the Co-pilot can be taken of the aircraft, whilst being restrained and shouting, swearing and asking to speak to God. How can the airline say that there was no danger to the flight. If there was no danger, why did they have to land to get him off?

Airlines will land an aircraft and remove a drunk passenger, who cannot get near the cockpit, and say he/she was a danger to the flight. but a Co-pilot who goes AWOL is'nt.

  1. It was within everyone's best interests to get the pilot off early. Why would they want to keep him onboard whilst his health was deteriorating rather than land at the 'nearest' airport, so he can get professional help. El capitano did the righ thing- the 'effo' needed to get help ASAP.

Hope the guy recovers and gets back soon as :)

  2. Well he was not brown, did not had a beard and did not wear a turban. He was not from Asia too. So, according to the many, there was no danger.

  3. Pilots are people too and also vulnerable to personal problems, but only a few (a very, very few) have ever created such an incident. One thing that non-airline pilots cannot understand or imagine is how stressful the job of an airline pilot can be.  It may seem like a double standard to you, but the average jerks who get removed from airline flights on an almost weekly basis are just that - average jerks - who are unpredictable and have an unknown history of behavior, so the flight crews cannot take any chances with them. A professional airline pilot, on the other hand, goes through rigorous training and psychological screening, and then spends years working as a pilot on smaller aircraft in order to reach the cockpit of a major airliner.  Believe me, any hint of weird or  unstable behavior gets them bounced out of a flying career very early on. As for the bloke who had a breakdown, you cannot guess the whole story just from a few speculative "headline news" comments. I'm sure it was very disturbing to the passengers who witnessed the event, but unless the guy was also suicidal, there's no indication that he posed any danger to the flight other than making the other crewmembers jobs more difficult. Obviously the captain handled the incident magnificently by recognizing a potential problem, declaring an emergency, and landing the plane ASAP in order to avoid any further complications.  I'm not saying there was no potential danger, but it appears that the guy suffering a breakdown had no intention of crashing the airplane or hurting anyone.

p.s. AWOL means "absent without leave", which is a military term that has a completely different meaning than what you probably meant to say.

  4. You are thoroughly mistaken to look upon this incident as suggesting there are unannounced risks in aviation or that proper procedures were not followed.

It was correct to say that a diversion and landing was called for, and it is also correct to say that no passengers were in danger.

I know of one instance in which a crew member drank some bottled water he had brought from home (this was 15 years ago or more) into which a member of his family had mixed a powerful sedative.  He fell asleep and could not be wakened.

The flight was diverted to a nearby airport in the interest of the crew member's health, and a replacement crew was called for because the diversion would have extended the starting crew beyond time limits.

Same thing, really.  The safety procedures were in place to ensure there were no hazards.

I hope the poor guy in the story will be okay.  There was no danger.

  5. Pilots are just as human as anyone else. This guys' not the first pilot I've heard of who has split from the program; although he's the second one who's done it while on duty.

Hey, it's been known to happen from time to time.

  6. they did not actually say he was no danger to the aircraft because he obviously was.

what they stated the aircaft was in no danger during the incident or in other words everything was under control

  7. thats very true indeed, its bollox isnt it from them

the co-pilot prob wanted to goto a pub in irland called god
