So if you have two females (from the same litter) and one has pups, can the other female stay in the cage.

Don't flip out at me for breeding hamsters because I didn't.

I just need this question answered. Thanks!

  1. take the other female out, the mother of the litter of pups will take her first instinct to protect them and eat them (happened to mine :( :( :( :( it was a bad site and i saved two but they wouldn't eat the formula so the also were gone.

  2. There are a couple things that can happen.

    1. The two females will get along perfectly fine. With no problems. The extra female might even help raise the babies.

    2. The mom will become territorial and will continuously attack the extra female, or even kill her.

    3. The extra female will attack the mom and/or eat the babies.

    4. The extra female will steal the babies and try to raised them herself, but since she is no lactating, they will slowly starve to death.

You just have to watch them and see. Usually you can just avoid a lot of problems by separating the mom and her babies from the other adults.
