Would they be required to register their marriage in the United States or something like that for their marriage to be valid? How does that work?

  1. if you got married in India ? as a US citizen ,you must report the marriage to a US consulat in India nearest you residence ,

    Marriage in India

The procedure for a foreigner (e.g., an American citizen) to get married in India depends on whether the parties wish to participate in a religious ceremony or a civil ceremony.  If required, the Embassy can issue a “no objection” letter to any American citizen who wishes to obtain an Indian marriage certificate.  The letter can be obtained free of charge from the American Citizen Services Unit any weekday from 10:00 – 12:00 or 2:00 – 3:30, simply by presenting a U.S. passport.

If after marrying, you are interested in obtaining an immigrant visa to the United States for your new spouse, please contact the Department of Homeland Security’s U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (previously known as “INS”) to obtain more information about filing an immigrant visa petition.  Their website is www.uscis.gov.  Their office at the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi can be reached by writing to ins.ndi@dhs.gov, or by calling 2419-8506 (begin by dialing 011-91-11- if calling from the United States).

  2. IT should as long as that countries laws were followed with marrige licenses and all.

  3. F10, the precise answer is found in this link.**

  4. You should have no problem. I see a lot of American tourists go to my country, get married and bring the women here without any problems.  I have friends and and relatives as well who have taken their boyfriends and girlfriends back to my country, married and returned here without any problems. All you have to do is report the changes to your embassy in that particular country and it should be registered in the system worldwide.

  5. Yes, and check this site visajourney.com. It'll help you a little.

  6. The marriage certificate is valid but there might not be a record of the marriage in US.  I am British but I married in Jamaica and there is no record of my marriage in UK Registry unless I apply to have it recorded

  7. yes, their marriage will most probably be recognized by the US. At the most you may need the marriage document attested by the local US Consulate. if you ahve issues, just get remarried again in  US at a civil court.
