What would be left over?

Would the texture change?

Could you still eat it?

When the bacteria is killed, where does it go?

Would the yogurt dissolve?

What could the leftover substance be used for?

  1. Good question...why not try it...

But what if yogurt is the 1%??

Never thought of that did you!

I am sure you could still eat it...but um yeah...no

  2. You can always just mix it to see what is left but hand sanitizers are typically a gel solution of an alcohol so it'd definitely NOT be a good idea to eat your yogurt after adding the sanitizer. The sanitizer contains not listed on the bottle because they aren't of any significance to the sanitizer's purpose. You would have to try out your little sanitizer + yogurt experiment to answer your questions.

  3. i dont know what'll happen when you mix it, but theres no way you can eat it

  4. Most hand sanitizers contain at least 60 percent of Ethyl alcohol.  This is the "magic ingredient" that kills bacteria.  The problem is that the hand sanitizer is designed to kill bacteria on hands (or surface skin) and not in a homogenized culture like yogurt.

If the yogurt is an active culture (and not pasteurized to kill the bacteria before sale), then you would need a lot more sanitizer to kill all of the bacteria.  Typical bacteria found include Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus.

When mixed, you would get a diluted version of yogurt.  It would cloud and turn into a less viscous liquid.  The alcohol would also denature any milk proteins in the yogurt.  These would eventually fall out of solution.  The soluble part of the yogurt would dissolve.

Could you still eat it?  That depends upon any other ingredients in the sanitizer and whether or not you add a lot of it to the yogurt.  The manufacturers of most hand sanitizers warm about Keeping out of reach of children and if swallowed, get medical help.

Some of the bacteria are killed when their outer membrane is ruptured.  These would dissolve in the mixture.  Others might die but remain intact and could be viewed in a microscope.

I know of no use for the resulting mixture.
