Question:

If a carpet is heavily soiled, should anything be done in between taking out and putting in the new carpet?

I'm renting and my carpet is being changed (it was covered in red wine stains and smelling a bit), but the people doing it want to take out the old and put in the new all in one go and just give the floorboards a sweep. Is there anything more they should be doing to make sure the floorboards are in good order? Is there something I could do when they come (I really don't want to have to take up the carpets myself beforehand if I can avoid it).

I heard black tea is anti-dust mites and tea tree and eucalyptus are anti-bacterial and mould (maybe?), so if I did take out the carpet I could give the boards a mop with both and let it dry...

Would bicarbonate of soda be a better idea, just lay it all over the place after they've swept up and before the new carpet is fitted?

  1. If your carpet has smells of any kind coming through it there is a good chance that the smell ( whatever it might be is trapped in the floor board ) . What you want to do is After the old carpet is up, seal the floor boards with a stain sealing paint. This will also seal odors so they won't come up through the new carpet. There is a brand of this paint I use called  ( Kilz ) and it works really good. But your local paint store should have something if they don't have that brand.

  2. last thing you want to do is to make the area under the carpet wet.Just let the installers come in and do there thing, like you said it is the carpet that smells bad very rarely is the floor boards the problem unless you have some serious spillage and mites are every where even in your eye brows {fact} you will never get rid of them any type of mite
