  2. Word of advice when doing problems like these: include N and 2N terms.  It's easy to lose track and accidentally half and double your numbers.

    If 2N = 32, then the daughter cells will be N = 16 after meiosis.

    In mitosis 2N = 32, then the daughter cells will be 2N = 32.

  3. Yup, 16 is right. Meiosis results in the chromosome number being halved after each cell cycle.

  4. The "daughter" cells would have 16 chromosomes--half the number of the "parent" cell. Remember, this parent cell is also said to be diploid--that is, it has the full number of chromosomes normal for its organism. The daughter cells are said to be haploid--that is, they have only half the full number of chromosomes normal for its organism.

    Haploid cells are only formed through meiosis; haploid cells are called gametes = reproductive cells. In human males, gametes are called "sperm;" in human females, they are called ova [ovum = singular].

    When fertilization occurs, the chromosomes of the two types of  gametes "pool" their DNA to make a brand-new individual, never before seen in our biosphere.
