If a child is having medical emergency, do we have to put him in carseat, during ride to ER? Esp. if its something in the trachea or other such choking incident and you need to rush

  1. they strap u and the child in

  2. One thing to keep in mind is whoever is driving is going to be extremely distracted and in a rush.  If you can get there much quicker than the ambulance then you might want to buckle yourself and hold the child which will still be dangerous if there's an accident if you don't have another driver you need an ambulance.  There's no way to safely drive yourself while trying to manage a child in that situation.  Keeping in mind that the seat is the beat restraint you'll just have to make a judgement call if the time ever comes.

  3. YES! You do not want him to get injured on the way there.  If you can't put him in a car seat, call an ambulance.

  4. When my 3 yr old had an asthma attack we called an ambulance. Don't bother with trying to drive  your child yourself. They helped him in the ambulance too and gave him breathing treatments. They did strap him in but were treating him at the same time.

  5. (Hopefully this is a hypothetical question -- I sincerely hope the child is not choking at this moment)

But you need to weigh your options. How close are the nearest TWO rescue squads/firehouses? (I say two because the closer one may already be out on another call) How close is the nearest hospital?  You need to think which would be faster in that situation -- you taking the child yourself, or calling an ambulance. The EMT's are trained, and have oxygen, but if you are less than a mile from the hospital -- don't waste the time calling them and haul *** to the ER.

Something else to consider is that you don't want to be rushing to the ER with an unrestrained child and get in an accident that could be just as deadly as the choking incident.

Your best bet would be to learn infant/child CPR yourself and also call 911 in the meantime (unless of course you are less than a mile from the hospital).

I am an EMT, my husband is a firefighter/paramedic, and we STILL have the instructions for infant CPR and choking printed and taped on our daughter's bedroom wall. (When its your own, I'd imagine it would be rather hard to remember your training.)

  6. That is totally your call. If you feel he is safer, then strap him in. If you don't, then don't.

I took my husband to the hospital once and got pulled over. While the officer was walking up to my car, I hollared out that I was on my way to the hospital. He waved me on and told me he would call the hospital to make sure they would be ready for me. He followed me there. You do NOT have to pull over for an officer if you are driving to save the life of your child or anyone in the car for that matter. The officer of course is going to trail you, but you will not get in trouble if the situation ends up being life-threatening.

I hope if this did happen to you, that all turned out ok. If it's more feasable, though, you really should call an ambulance.

  7. i dont really know, but i would hold him next to me....and i wouldnt even stop for the cops if they tried to pull me over for speeding

  8. use your best judgement
