I asked a question, "For what reason would a child be deemed "unadoptable"?" See answers below:

And the conclusion is that if a child is too old, or mentally or physically disabled they are considered "Unadoptable".

Well what would happen to a child if they were unadoptable, or "hard to place"?

  1. If the child were unadoptable, they would likely remain in foster care. There are some group homes for family groups or older children as well.  Finally, some seriously ill or profoundly retarded children are institutionalized.

  2. Foster care until they age out.

In my son's case the unadoptable edge was used to "persuade" me to relinquish my rights "willingly".

  3. They remain in foster care.  As others have stated, this usually  means a train of foster homes.  Upon reaching 18, the young person is then "aged out" of the system, and on his/her own.  A good number of these young people end up incarcerated, homeless or living otherwise unstable lives because they did not come from stable backgrounds, nor did they learn the skills necessary to make it on their own.

Unlike young people who go out on their own but still have families to fall back on for support, these people have no one, really.  It's exponentially more  difficult for them to make it out there because of their unstable backgrounds, lack of skills and lack of ongoing support.  That's not to mention the emotional problems and other issues related to difficulties with trust, love and attachment.

  4. The person above is correct.  They usually go through several foster homes until they reach 18.  And, then they are set free to fend for themselves.  (How many 18 year olds do you know who can really look after themselves.)

In my state, they continue to get some help from the state, such as paid in-state college.  However, most don't take advantage of this and continue to have problems well into their adulthood.

  5. Foster home until they are 18. Some could still adopt them but it is unlikely.

Or I should say foster HOMES. They are usually bounced around ALOT!

  6. they remain in foster care untill they are 18 then turned out on their own

  7. -foster care until 18.

-independent living (if programs are available) untill 21-25.

    -group home, if mentally ill.

-if no IL is available... kicked. to. the. curb...

  8. Institution or group home.  Very sad end for children with problems.  If too old, they remain in foster care unless they find someone who wants them.

  9. if i remember correctly,

if a child stays in the orphantry or whats it called untill he/she is 18 or 21, my state gives them some cash and send it out to the world to make its own.

i don't remmeber if they find them a place to stay and a job,

but im not sure, i will need to ask again, i asked that question years ago.
