I'm a 22 year old female that has been taking care of my 13 year old brother since November. My mom moved out to be closer to her job leaving me to take care of my younger brother. He's been missing alot of school mostly because i think he's trying to deal with her leaving. Because of this i'm worried that CAS might get involved. My question is can the school get the children's aid involved and take him away?

  1. I am sorry to say that yes the school can definitely get involved because it is considered negligence on the part of the guardian.  He has to miss a certain amount of days within the school year.  I would suggest that you contact the school guidance counselor and have a talk with them.   Question though do you have guardianship of your brother??  Did your mom sign papers giving legal guardianship of him??

If so it should be a piece of cake to handle your situation.  If not then it complicates thing greatly.

Good luck with everything and you are to be commended for your being a great big sister and stepping to the plate and being their for your brother.

  2. Yes! They will get involved if he is missing too many days, unfortunately. You may want to see about doing a homeschool program with him, as well as go in and talk to the school and usually if they know what is going on and you talk to them they will try to work with you. It is better to be preemptive about it, rather than just waiting and calling when he is out.

  3. YES!  School is required by law and by not seeing that he gets an education is neglect!!

  4. Our local school district notifies the county department of family services every time a child misses over a certain amount of days.  If this continues to happen, the legal guardian (you, your mom?) will be investigated for negligent child abuse.

  5. yes they will and can, please make sure that he goes to school

  6. your brother can be stopped from going into the next grade, you can get a ticket from the truant officer and there is a possibility that jailtime can be another thing that can happen... that happened to a friend who did not take her son to schoool..... she was lazy!  Your mother NEEDS to be involved with her son and stop throwing your brother on you over a job.... she should have stayed or taken him with her!!!!

  7. YES! here in my area a mother recently was sent to jail cause her kids missed to many days of school in on school year!

  8. The school can most definately get Children't aid involved, but I'm not sure that truancy equates to removing the child from the home.

Is your brother having any issues at school with the other kids? 13 is hard on anyone, and not having your mom (or dad?) around... that would be tough.

He might just be using the school thing to see how much you'll put up with- a test?

If you call school, they might have a coucelor to help.

  9. Yes be careful maybe he needs a BIG BROTHER to talk to to help you both deal  God Bless

  10. Yes they can ! make sure he goes .... you and your mom could both get into a lot of trouble.

  11. A lot of schools have truency rules.. if a child misses too much school there will be a warning.  If it continues than there is a fine the parent has to pay, if it still continues then some serve jail time.  The school must give you a warning before those apply or they can report you to Child services that will investigate.  Also, some schools wont allow a child to move up a grade if too much school is missed.  You arent doing him favors by letting him stay home and "grieve". You need to make his life as normal as possible and that includes going to school.  At this point, you should speak with the principal to see if you can get him some tutoring to get him caught up and maybe a counselor.  Good Luck

  12. Yes, definately...Get him back into school as much as possible...you could go and talk to the school about what is going on...(not too much detail, wouldn't want mom in prison)...the school should understand...

The school will definately get involved if he is missing school and bringing no notes of excuses. just have him bring notes saying he was sick
