  1. You can get advice from an expert at this site, for a very small price.  I found it yesterday and used it to get advice on my computer when neither mouse nor trackpad would work, so I could not use the laptop.  For 12 pounds I got a guy who told me just what to do, and kept trying until I got it mended.  You choose how much you will pay (in my case 8 pounds, 12, or 20), and if you are not satisfied with the answer you don't accept and don't pay.  They have experts on everything--law, medicine, veterinarian, mechanics, you name it.  I  probably saved about £90 pound by not taking my computer to a shop, who would have kept it a few days, lost all the data and charged me the earth.  I really loved this site, and you seem to need proper appropriate advice for your area.

  2. Technically yes, the can assign or sell the debt to a collections agency who will attempt to recoup the money owed.

What you need to do is learn your rights under the FCRA, FDCPA and any state laws. Demand validation of any and all debts, make them PROVE you owe it. Also, know the statute of limitations on debts in your state.

  3. Start by telling them to contact you in writing.

Get their address and send them a letter, in which you ask for proof of the debt.

A charge-off should not come back to haunt you.

Get your credit report as well.

And read up on credit collection laws for your state.  Your state protects you from these people if you are informed.
