  1. they could have you show up and fire you on the spot - do you prefer that?

why not ask THEM what the reason is?

  2. Sure can. Provided their answer isn't..oh, we didn't know you were black/g*y/woman, etc.

They can hire you and fire you on your first day too.

That being said, you may be able to qualify for unemployment given the circumstances. That is if you left another job based on the other offer of employment.

  3. Most places are "at-will" employment, so they can do this without even giving a reason. If it's contract employment, they can still do this until the contract is signed.

  4. if you have a letter from them (not just a verbal agreement) and you left your previous job as a result of that letter, i think you have a case against them.  you left your previous employer in good faith that a new position was waiting for you.

you must be able to prove it though.

  5. Yes they sure can.  It may be budget cuts, or they didn't get the right signatures, they hired without authorization, there is a management change in progress. There are a gazillion reasons.

  6. They can - you never started work so the contract had not begun.

  7. Yes they can...uh..it's their company!

  8. They probably found out some information through their criminal background checks or speaking with one of your listed references that made you an undesirable candidate.  They absolutely can do that.

  9. They hadn't actually hired you yet.  They just had the intention to.  Sounds like something happened in the interim.  Your background check/drug test came back ineligible for hire, one of your references came back bad, they found a better candidate, or they decided not to hire anyone at all.  I would ask them what happened.  If they decided to hold off on hiring, tell them you would still be interested in the postion when it opens back up.

Either way, start looking for something else.
