If a country is autonomous, how is that different to it being independent?

I just wanted to understand this:

"January 2005 - Russia gives guarded approval to Georgia's plan to grant broad autonomy to South Ossetia in exchange for dropping its bid for independence."

  1. Autonomy means it can basically control itself, but it will remain a part of Georgia.
