  1. Absolutely!

Yes, all homeschooling parents have a legal right to issue a diploma when their child completes their course of study, and these diplomas ARE recognized, however many people, especially public school parents and students, are under the misconception that a diploma is more than a mere certificate of achievement, no different than one you'd recieve in recognition of winning some award, completing a season on a sports team, completing kindergarten, etc. It is just a cirtificate awarded in recognition of one's completion of an academic program.

When applying to universities, a diploma is not really worth the paper it's printed on. Homeschoolers do not need one, nor do they need a GED or diploma from an accredited school. Colleges wont look at it or even ask for it. In nearly all cases, universities are only interested in seeing a homeschoolers transcript, SAT/ACT scores, extracurricular activities, and all other application requirements such as essays, interviews, etc. Some universitie3s may also wish to see a bibliography of materials used for each course listed on the transcript (to get an idea of what exactly was studied), or the results of additional testing such as the SAT II subject tests.

This in no way gives homeschoolers a disadvantage when applying to universities. If anything, homeschoolers have an equal or better chance of getting accepted. Many top notch universities actually actively seek out and recruit homeschoolers... Even universities like Harvard or Yale accept a growing number of homeschoolers every year. Colleges are aware of the fact that many homeschoolers are out-performing public school age mates on standardized tests, tend to be highly self motivated (they go there loving and wanting to learn), independent, mature, well socialized, and ready for the adult world.

Even with public schoolers, the transcript, activities, and test scores are what colleges are oncerned about. All your diploma does is say "I did it!". It's more a ceremonial thing than it is an indicator of how desireable you'll be to universities.

As for jobs, if your employer actually wants to SEE your diploma (which few do) you can show them your non-accredited diploma and explain that you were homeschooled. If this isn't enouvh, explain that you can also provide them with transcripts and additional references if they'd like. Chances are they wont ask for anything extra.

  2. Let's all remember that a Public School (Government run) is NOT accredited in any way.  It is a special certification that private schools, colleges, distance learning etc. acquire and pay for to say they are accredited, meaning they meet certain requirements.

Your transcript and SAT, ACT scores are what matter the most to colleges.  Just try to keep good records of you high school years with letter grades, gpa, scope/secquence etc.  Also, look at several college sites online to find out what they really want to see on a transcript, they all have different requirements.

  3. YES!!

Even Yale will accept it if you have the test scores necessary!

  4. The reason that I am not concerned about my son having an 'accredited' diploma is because my stepdaughter graduated from an accredited public school.    She is not educated but she has a diploma.

She took a placement test for a local community college and they required for her to take remedial classes for math and language arts.   She has problems reading and understanding what she reads.

She does have a job.  It is the same place where she worked part time when she was 15 years old.   At that time, she put on her application that she had a 3.5 grade average.  That was not the truth but it was never verified.

So, in answer to your question: Even the accredited diplomas are of no value IF they only are an indication that a person was in a class for so many hours of the day.

  5. Only an unaccredited school would take it.  As for jobs, it depends.  The higher paying jobs that require specialization will not (usually) take unaccredited degrees.

  6. Plenty of homeschoolers go to college without accredited diplomas, they get in with their home made transcripts, and their  SAT and ACT scores.

Employers rarely ask to see your diploma, they do ask if you graduated, and if you are homeschooled and you finished your course of study, then you graduated and you can mark "yes".
