Question:

If a fern dies will it regrow or should I dig it up and throw it away?

I have a fern that was so beautiful in the spring and now since its over 100 degrees this summer where I live its dying help???

  1. if it's dying because of the conditions it's not likely to grow again, and if it does it will just die again because it's not in a good spot.. if you can, move it to a place where it gets more shade, and make sure it's getting enough water  :)


  2. Dig it up and put it in a place with more shade and it will do beautiful.

  3. Your fern is probably a gonner. Ferns require wet misting conditions in dappled shade and never let the roots dry out. If your fern is not in all three of the conditions above it will die quickly and not come back especially if the root ball had dried out. Temps in the 100's dry out ferns quickly if not protected from the elements.

    Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. If the above advice is followed you have a better handle on caring for ferns and the next one you buy will have a much better survival rate.  Happy fern hunting!

  4. I've had mine go dormant and die to the ground due to heat before.  Like suggested, you can always try moving it to a more shaded location or providing more water.  I've also put ice on the ground around ferns & other heat sensitive plants in order to cool the soil and air around them on extremely hot days.
