How long of a delay?  If you don't have something to occupy yourself while on the flight, you're going to be very bored, depending on the length of the flight..

I see where 52 people, whose flight was cancelled, refused to leave the plane, and were on it when it finally DID take off, the next day...

If its delayed for only a little bit like an hour than go to Mcdonalds. If its for a while than get some food for like 30 minutes to an hour, go to the bookstore, walk near your gate, read a book, take a restroom break than just talk to your neighbor . And another thing if you are meeting up with family or friends make sure to call them and tell them you're going to be late.

if there is a flight delay you can stay at the airport or if you are already boarded you may have a choice to stay aboard

If you are still queuing at the check-in counter, they will temporary closed the counter until further notice from both Airport Official and the respective Carrier's. The Carrier representative will be at the counter to offer assistance if passengers need to rescheduled their connecting flights if the delays prolong.

Otherwise, you will have to stay on standby until further updates at the check-in counter.

Some cases, the Carrier will offer F&B Voucher to all passengers.

If delay or worst cancelled flight beyond the Airport Official capacity. The carrier's will then proceed with alternative contingency processes eg: find another carriers leaving for the same destination for some case to case (Mostly for First or Business Class Passengers) and the rest will be provided with a free accommodation till the aircraft certified ready to fly or alternatively another aircraft arriving in due course.

Myself once got into a flight with accordance. Got my seat belt on and seat upright awaiting for push back from the terminal to the taxiway. Apparently, the Airbus A340-300 Computer self diagnosed encountered a failure with the Hydrolic System upon both doors closed. This happen during midday flight and the Pilot tried vigorously to reboot the Aircraft Computer System by turning the Auxiliary Power for numerous times and still unable to override the Aircraft Computer System. Hence, The Pilot has to make an PA Announcement to all passengers that we will have to wait in the aircraft till the Aircraft Engineers arrive to override the Aircraft System manually. We all remained in the humid cabin with fully loads of passengers for the next 3 Hours.

Eventually, they managed to manually override the Computer System and upon disembarked from the aircraft we was told the next flight will be hold back till next morning. This is to enable both Airbus and the Carrier Engineers to rectify the fault and ensure it's meets with the stringent maintenance protocol. Hence, we were all then given with a Free Hotel Accommodation, Free 2 Way Airport-Hotel-Airport Transfer, Free 3 Meals Voucher, Free Overseas Call to updates our families, employer, etc and apologies from the Carrier Representative at the Aerobridge to Welcome us back to the Airport Terminal.

I was impressed with the immediate recovery provided by the carrier's to check-in me to Grand Hyatt Hotel.

I was flying First Class on that eventful day.

Bottom line if the above do occur, remained calm and allow the Carrier's representative to assist you with the utmost possible solutions.

Not much you can do, unfortunately.  Just pray you aren't trying to make a connecting flight.  We ended up missing my grandmother's funeral today because our flight yesterday was delayed so long we missed our connecting flight and they were going to make us stay overnight and take one out this morning.  We gave up and flew back home (only a short flight, thankfully, but we still wasted 9 hours of our day).

Added:  The flight this morning would not have gotten us there in time for the funeral, which is why we decided to go home.  We kept being told we'd make our connecting flight, which was clearly a crock of bull.   I'll never fly US Airways again.

Call your family and say that your  flight has been delayed. If you have food with you eat it or buy food.Chew a gum so that you will not be sleepy.Wait until the plane has come so that you will not be left.
