If a football goes right over the field goal post is it good or not good?

  2. NOT good.  The nose of the ball, or its center, must pass inside the uprights.  A ball going directly over the center is assumed to have "hit" the imaginary pole that extends infinitely upward.  It's the same principle as the goal line.  It ascends vertically from the ground, even though it is physically located and painted on the ground.  

  3. The ENTIRE football has to be inside the goal post for a field goal that passes over the post to be good.  That is why officials are standing right underneath each post to have a good angle on it.

    Essentially the assumption is that if the posts were infinitely tall a ball hitting the post in any way is much more likely to be no good than good.
