  1. As was already stated, they expand upon impact and usually the base of  the bullet remains intact enough to make it traceable. You would have to move the bullet at high speed and hope that it breaks and deforms enough so that the striations would be unreadable.

  2. The bullet expands when it strikes the target (person or animal) what ever "fingerprints" are unique to you firearm's rifleing it will also show up on the pullet.

  3. They don't expand upon exiting the barrel they expand on impact and they usually don't expand  to the point that they are completely obliterated

hollow points have a brass jacket that picks up the striations

Even if the lead is flattened the brass is usually recoverable with the markings intact

  4. As noted, they do not begin to expand until they have made contact with an object. The base of the bullet basically stays intact and does not deform, so yes, they can still read the ballistic fingerprint from the lands, grooves and imperfections of the firearms barrel imprinted on the bullet.

  5. they dont expand when it exits the barrel, it expands when it exits whatever it entered, Example: it enters a body the size of a dime but it comes out the size of a tennis ball

  6. they dont expand upon leaving the bbl...when they expand in whatever they hit there is still styrations and marks on the base of the bullet

  7. Yes there will be land and groove marks left on the bullet from the rifling inside the barrel, and still be traceable to that gun.* The only way it would not be traceable is not to have any rifling inside the barrel at all, in other words a smooth bore rifle, however this would affect accuracy at certain distances or ranges.* It would still be traceable to that rifle regardless or any other rifle without rifling for comparison ballistic-ally.*~

  8. If enough of the bullet can be recovered.  Finding the bullet is the first order of business.  Sometimes they are never found.  Forensic science has advanced to the point that some much info. can be obtained even from a bullet fragment or a shell casing although not as much as the popular crime shows would have you believe.

  9. They are still traceable. Are you gonna shoot someone or something that you don't wanna get traced back to you? Perhaps a shotgun.
