Thanks!

This is a simple question!

If the horse was cooled out after a ride and drank water for maybe 5 minutes TOPS, would he or she get sick? Collic?

  1. A horse is not likely to colic from too much water.  Laminitis could be a problem if a horse drinks too much water before cooled out correctly.  I have had horses for over thirty years and I believe a horse should have access to as much cool clean water as possible.  Caution should be used when a horse is not cooled out properly but I have never had a horse drink too much water.  They know when to stop drinking.  I have had horses that played in their water like placing their head to the bottom of a bucket and blowing the water out of the bucket.  (Very aggravating) I have had them flop the water around with their lip.

  2. Not if you waited a while to give them water , maybe1/2

  3. No, if she is completely cooled out she will not get colic. Colic from just water isn't very common unless they where really hot and sweaty. You would probably see symptoms with in two or three hours. No more then four though.

  4. It's possible.  However if the horse is completely cooled down it is unlikely.  Offer your horse some water once you think he is cool, then tie him up and groom him.  Once you're done, he should be fine to drink as much as he wants.  To be honest, it's better to just give a thirsty horse water rather than making him wait.  Just make sure the water isn't really cold.

  5. no your horse probably won't get collic it is very unlikley it is healthy for your horse to drink lots of water

  6. That is actually a proven myth. Unless it was, like, ice water and the horse was huffing and puffing and was really hot, it would be fine. Hope I helped!

  7. If the horse is completly cooled, it will not get colic. But getting colic from drinking too much water after a workout is uncommen but can happen. But a horse that didn't get cooled off and was given cold water, and drank for 5 min, yes they could but unlikely get colic.

  8. If she is completly cooled downt then no.The reason they get colic is the same as if we get a stitch.

If we drink to much water and our system has not had time to cool down and get to the average speed then yes that can cause problems.

An average cool down would consist of 5minutes walking a trotting then 5mins after that walking.

Trotting because you dont want them to rapidly cool down, you want to let them cool down nice and easily.

  9. This is actually a myth that they can colic from drinking water right after a workout.  As long as the water isn't shockingly cold, they can drink (and is healthier for them) to drink after exercise and will not colic.
