If a hovered over the earth unsuspended would I end up somewhere else the next day?

  1. well even if the earth was spinning under you and you were stationary you would land in the same spot if it was exactly 1 day later......however realistically you would spin with the earth because you still have forward velocity


  2. If by over the earth you mean outside the atmosphere and you didn't have any velocity at all at the point the experiment began then YES, you would be over another point the next day (gravity would leave you alone).

    Even the space shuttle needs to use power to reach the atmospehere at which point gravity takes over.

  3. gravity would pull you, you'd be in orbit with earth moving the same speed as the earth

  4. Only a very slight bit.

    Gravity will keep you in place as much as possible, but the force of the atmospheric rotation (almost the same as Earth) will carry you along. Of course, there would be some air resistance, but the error in landing site would be minimal.
